West Yorkshire Astronomical Society

We open on Tuesday evenings from 7.15pm for members and the public. We have a visiting speaker approximately once a month. We have started a beginner course which is run on Fridays.

WYAS was formed in 1973. A few years later, work began to build an observatory. This work was carried out entirely by members in their spare time. The Rosse Observatory was completed in 1983 and opened by Patrick Moore on Sunday September 25th 1983.

We have upgraded the observatory to cater for wheelchair access to both observatory and rear observing pad. We recently installed a new dome mounted telescope for beginners and astro-photographers to use.

We charge £3.00 for members and Carleton Community Centre Members and £4.00 for non members. Visiting speaker evenings are charged at £4.00 for members and £5.00 non members.

We can accommodate visits by schools, youth groups and adult groups. Please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or see our website at wyas.org.uk for information.
